Watch It: A Training Method

Seriously, record yourself and then watch yourself

This is in progress and every within is subject to revision or total deletion, k?

Nothing Fancy with this One

When I work on improving as a tutor, I watch videos of myself teaching. Simple as that. Is it possible for me to improve without doing this? Absolutely. Would I be squandering an easy method for improvement if I didn’t watch my tapes? Also yes.

It won’t be any different for you!

Training: How To

  1. Talk out loud! Tell your future self exactly what you’re doing and why.

  2. Use process of elimination and articulate the reason you’re discarding each answer choice.

  3. Pay attention to your process, not just your analysis and answer selection:

    1. what process do you follow to attack specific question types?

    2. Are you being consistent in applying your attack process within each question type/grouping?

    3. Are you jumping into answering before you grasp the prompt?

  4. Look for confusion points (instances where you stopped analyzing because you weren’t certain how to proceed).

    • Confusion points are where people usually tilt and spiral. Panic sets in, especially as the confusion point increases in duration.

    • So ask yourself (a) why did they happen and (b) how can you improve your attack process to minimize confusion points?

Training Notes

  • This is an untimed practice exercise. Explaining aloud will slow you down tremendously. Questions I solve in 1 minute silently often take 5-10 minutes to teach aloud to students.

  • Don’t rush. Don’t dump verbal spaghetti on your future self, either. Take your time reflecting on what you’re doing, and how to best explain it to your future self.

  • Use old sections the first few times you do this. You can, if you want. But I think it’s helpful, training-wise, to first work with questions you vaguely recognize. Initially, you want to focus on honing your ability to articulate your process and analysis aloud; then, start using fresh material to hard focus on the analysis.
